As expected, makers of the serial feel they are allowed this creative liberty even as they stick as far as possible to facts. Jhansi-based historian Prof Jawaharlal Kanchan professes to be annoyed by the televised life of Jhansi’s Rani Laxmi Bai. He protests, “Serial makers should not play with history. Such things can also amount to providing incorrect information to young minds.” The bone of contention for Prof Kanchan is an episode which shows Rani Laxmi Bai wounded by enemy soldiers while on a visit to a hilltop temple in Jhansi. “And despite being hurt she visits the temple. But there is no historical evidence of such an incident and neither is there any such hilltop temple in Jhansi,” he points out. While admitting to feeling happy with serial makers giving an authentic feel to the dresses and ornaments worn by the characters, Dr Pandey is upset with some of the content: “Rani Lakshmi Bai is like a goddess to us and seeing her story presented in a distorted manner is painful. Showing intimate bedroom scenes of is also unacceptable. I feel that makers of the serial should understand that they cannot distort historical facts just for the sake of TRPs.”. While Prof Kanchan offers to parley with the makers of the serial to “discuss, so that we can together figure out how the contents are not distorted and presented to the audience”, the makers themselves see nothing wrong in what they are showing. Miraj Zaidi, scriptwriter of “Jhansi Ki.”, who started his career as a theatre artiste from Kanpur, says, “I completely deny that the serial is showing something different from history.
But yes, we have utilised creative license to make the serial interesting. The content of the serial has been decided after a lot of research. But no one can stop the historians if they want to take the course of law.”. Zaidi may shrug off a legal threat but Dharmesh Shah, director of “Jhansi.” says he is yet to recieve any formal notice from those protesting.
