Bmw E46 Firing Circuit Drivers Airbag

I don't like offering advice on the airbag system, that said if you promise to keep the key away from the car and the neg cable off the battery, I would feel better. From WDS none of these circuits share anything except the module, makes it a possible choice.
There is however a known fault that can make things go way off in the diagnostics. If the resistance is too high to a tensioner the module sees more volts in other circuits and throws extra errors. Here is what WDS says about the issue. Repair cable for ignition circuits In the case of the seatbelt tensioner and side airbag ignition circuits, increased transition resistances in the plug-in connections mean that the fault pattern ”Resistance too high” can occur. The fault is frequently only present sporadically.
Is the following fault pattern present? • Resistance too high • Fault currently not present it is usually the case that the pyrotechnic unit for the seatbelt tensioner or side airbag is undamaged! For sustained fault elimination, a repair cable must be fitted. It also possible that you had this on one side for a long time with no light and now it just happened to the other side and caused the visible error.
That is my guess as one side never seems to light the warning. The most common spot is the plug under each of the seats, it is orange. It is a single plug with two connections, lots of pins. Not too dig on my own forum but there is another popular BMW forum that deals with all E39 models and has many posts on the high resistance issue.
One more thing to note is if you start getting in to look at the module there are two separate main models and many sub models. The main difference is US and Euro but really the difference is whether there is mandatory seat-belt law in the location where the car was sold.

This warning lamp had dogged do-it-yourselfers for years. The lamp is like a little gremlin--there apparently is no specific reason why or how it is activated-any number of seemingly harmless actions can set it off. The airbag lamps on all three of my E36 BMWs have been on at one time or another. Sometimes the light will stay lit, and then go out after about 3 minutes of driving.
Sometimes it will blink and then stay lit. Sometimes it will stay on continuously from when you start the car. Either way, each of these occurrences indicates that the airbag computer (also known as the SRS, or Supplemental Restraint System) has had a problem in the past. Any number of harmless acts can trigger the SRS lamp: • Driving the car through a large puddle, or being exposed to lots of rain • Swapping steering wheels • Removing the gauge cluster to replace light bulbs • Aggressive and/or track driving • Accidentally disconnecting an SRS component while hooking up electrical accessories, like an alarm or stereo • Pulling a fuse for the SRS system while performing electrical troubleshooting. • Bad seatbelt sensor in the belt receptacle (common failure) You can't clear the lamp by disconnecting the battery - it will stay on.
