Hi E39forever, What is it you'd like to acheive? 'Chips' is now a very out dated term, but it still sticks around for some reason!
Nowadays it's ECU Re-mapping and when done properly by experienced, top end and reliable tuning houses, the results are good. On a petrol engined car, the beneifts are smoother throttle response, elimination of flat spots in the Torque curve. Vids iv32 decompressor codec. These will combine to make the car feel better, the engine smoother in it's power delivery. A 'side' benefit is that on something like the 540i, you'll perhaps gain 10-12 bhp or so. Fuelling, timing and other ECU parameters are changed and optimised to provide this upgrade. The very best results are obtained when you combine a re-map with a few other choice mods, perhaps an air intake, full exhaust system etc.
If you are looking for bags more power and torque, then this isn't the way forward. Cheers, Dennis! West London UK! Dinan is on sale right now for $399, I'm in the same position as you are - 97 non sport auto 540 limited to 130mph. That's mainly why I want to get it done, also it does work a little and 6400rpm limiter is not a gimmick either. Not saying I'll be sitting at it all day, or do 160mph for that matter - but flashes do work, and do add enough power for you to feel a little more 'pep' if you will. With 3.38 gears I could use the limiter raise too let me know if you find anything good out or get it done, i want to get my mine updated soon!
